Glorious Gala Apples
To kick start the 2018 apple season, our hard-working growers Daniel and Toni Nicoletti from Nicoletti Orchards took some time away from their farm to showcase their crunchy new season Royal Gala apples at the Brisbane Produce Market a couple of weeks back. Excitement filled the air as pallets of bright red Stanthorpe apples adorned the Montague Fresh market floor. Greengrocers stopped in to have a chat with the growers and it was a thumbs up on this season’s amazing flavour.
From the markets to our ‘Meet the Growers’ in-store promotion in Brisbane’s Zone Fresh Gourmet Markets, shoppers were pleasantly surprised to meet the growers. Customers exchanged a few words and laughs sharing their stories, learning about how apples are grown in an orchard. Thanks to the team who helped put on a fantastic taste testing display, not to mention the oversized interactive street billboard depicting the Nicoletti Orchards brand. Thank you, Zone Fresh Gourmet Markets!
We love our road trips especially the fascinating sites around Queensland’s Darling Downs. After the Brisbane Markets, we headed West along the Warrego Highway – Darren Lockyer Way to see greengrocers in the Toowoomba region.
Our first stop was the quaint little township of Marburg between Ipswich and the Somerset region. Its history dates back to the 1860s with German settlers helping the town’s growth in the timber, sugar cane and dairy industries. Marburg has a number of heritage listed sites but what drew our attention was the charming antique store, Marburg Village Antiques. Well, it was certainly packed with an array of trinkets and collectibles, we had to quickly stop in.
Toowoomba’s Gardens and Green Grocers
Known as the Garden City, Toowoomba’s amazing public parks and gardens are absolutely magical but it doesn’t stop there. The streets are adorned with stunning street art murals created by some highly talented local and international artists. With the heritage listed Toowoomba City Hall and much agricultural land producing grain, beef, poultry, eggs and fruit and vegetables, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with how much this gorgeous country town has to offer.
After a little site seeing we stopped in to see the Boulos family at Westridge Fruit and Vegetables. Business owners Tony and Kathryn along with their son’s Luke and Matt and families strive to always deliver the freshest and tastiest produce. It was great to see Goulburn Valley’s Kaso Plums in store and the customers are loving the flavoursome fruit. We had a little photo shoot and then it was off to the next greengrocer.
A short drive away is Whyalla Plaza Fruit Mart and Anzac Avenue Fruit Mart and so we stopped in to have a chat with Darryl and his son Ben. Darryl’s stores have a traditional country style theme with loads of fresh produce including Nicoletti Orchards crunchy Royal Gala apples. Darryl and Ben enjoy learning about the different regions and varieties of where their produce comes from thus sharing it with their customers. We’re always happy to meet with all greengrocers around Queensland’s South East.
After a huge day with the grower’s photo-shoot, it was time to relax and indulge in the amazing beauty of Allure Stanthorpe. Glamping…yes we did it! The South African safari-style tent certainly put a smile on the dial offering plush furnishings including a chandelier and the most spectacular views, in our case, it was the sunset that will always remain in our memories. We were pleasantly surprised with some goodies including a delicious homemade granola, assortment of homemade jams and much to our surprise was a loaf of freshly baked bread. Yum! To top it off I got lots of cuddles from the family pet Maremma Caspian. Thanks, so much Marion and Ruth. We’ll be seeing you again!
The Kaso orchard has produced some super juicy red and yellow centred plums this season, and we’ll be sharing more on Facebook and Instagram.
We all know that the Chinese New Year is almost here and there’s some exciting news for our upcoming Nicoletti Orchards Fuji Apples, plus a mouth-watering recipe on the Kaso Plums.
You’ll find new season Nicoletti Orchards apples and Kaso Plums in a fruit shop near you. Buy local and support Aussie farmers!
