Alex and Skinder Kaso

Another one of Divine Fruits growers located interstate is the Kaso Family from the Goulburn Valley, Victoria. The Kaso family history started back in 1959 when Alex and Skinder’s father purchased a vast sandy 200-acre orchard in Coomboona, Shepparton. Alex and Skinder first started working in the orchard at the ages of 16 and 17 back in 1975 after they both finished tech school. Today, the dynamic sibling duo run the farm along with Skinder’s son Shaban.

progression
the business of fresh fruit
When the farm started, the majority of the fruit grown was mainly ‘canning’ fruit consisting of apricots, peaches, and pears. The work on the farm was mostly manual at that time. The fruit was harvested in wooden cases which held about 24kg. Progressively, the farm transitioned to using bulk bins and forklifts, which made the work a lot easier. As things were improving and changing Kaso started to change the fruit varieties and moved more into the business of fresh fruit markets with plums and apples. This is what the family is known for through Divine Fruits; their delicious Kaso plums.

diversification
it’s all in the variety
Some of the improvements made over the years were installing mini jet sprinklers, constructing a packing shed and utilising cool storage. Today, Kaso grows over 25 different varieties of red and black plums. They also grow Pink Lady and Royal Gala apples. The orchard has around 12 staff in the packing shed and another 20 out in the field. Kaso is always keen to diversify their product change to suit the market and provide everyone with amazing tasting fresh plums!
